Setting the City’s annual budget is an important part of the work City staff and the Council do each year. The Council sets strategic priorities to help with this process; they focus on:
- Economic Vitality and Community Vibrance
- Environmental Sustainability Stewardship
- Premiere Public Services and Infrastructure
- Inclusive and Responsive City Government
After the Council reviews recommendations from staff and commissions, they approve a preliminary budget. This sets the maximum tax levy – the amount by which taxes could increase in the coming year.
All residents pay a portion of the City’s expenses – the amount is based on property values. Collectively, taxpayers cover 66% of the City’s annual budget; the remaining is covered by grants and other funding sources.
Throughout the year, the City provides updates about how budget plans are implemented to accomplish the strategic priorities set by the Council.
