Holiday Lights Recycling Begins
Wednesday, November 15, 2023
Recycle your old, unwanted or non-working holiday string lights! Simply drop them off at City Hall during standard business hours. Collection ends Jan. 31, 2024.
Colorful lights may seem like a small part of the holiday season, but they can have a significant impact on the environment. Composed of glass, metal, and plastic, holiday lights can take years to break down in a landfill, contributing to pollution and waste. Moreover, broken holiday lights are not recyclable, and tossing them in the recycling bin can cause issues at recycling centers.
Recycling your old string lights serves a dual purpose: it reduces waste and supports the transition to energy-efficient LED lights, which are more durable and consume less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.
Recycling your holiday lights not only benefits the environment but also helps those in need. Some recycling programs donate the proceeds from recycling lights to charities like Toys for Tots, providing toys and books for children during the holiday season. So, by taking a few simple steps to recycle your old lights, you can contribute to a greener and more compassionate holiday season for all.
